Description of intervention
Programme developed and implemented in Peru aims to build a new masculinity for a community, free of sexual violence and sexual exploitation. Following research in Peru on the demand for sex with children, ECPAT worked with local organisations to implement a preventive programme that facilitates boys and young men to examine, through age sensitive methods, the construction of gender in their environment, in order to identify and promote changes in behaviours that infringe the rights of other children, particularly sexually harmful behaviour. The programme aims to promote awareness of the harm of CSEC, of men's roles in perpetuating sexual exploitation and their potential to become catalysts for change. It consists of forums for parents and teachers and a three day participatory group workshop. Groups are for boys and young men only, ages 11 -16 years and are facilitated by a man, in order to help boys feel more at ease and to open up more readily. Educational materials and activities, including role play, are used. Boys who have participated are encouraged to become part of a network and to replicate the workshops with other young men. This has led to the creation of a strong network of young men in Peru working to end CSEC.
Evaluations
Evaluations by ECPAT show that 40% of students achieve positive behavioural change, 70% are able to share efficiently what they have learnt about social norms, sexuality and sexual exploitation and 90% have discussed issues with their families.
